The idea for a New Jersey Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS) was first discussed September 13, 1989.
Under the guiding hands of the late Jean Sampson Scott, Chapter Establishment Chairperson for the AAHGS and a steering group led by Elizabeth Peale Johnson and Theodore Brunson, Director of the Afro-American Historical and Cultural Museum of Jersey City, NJ. The idea became a reality, with Mr. Brunson offering the museum as its meeting place.
On October 14th 1989, eleven people signed the chapter establishment applications as charter members.
The New Jersey Chapter of the African-American Historical and Genealogical Society was officially established on April 13, 1990 when the Charter was presented by Silvia Cook Martin, National AAHGS President.

- Published Journals and Newsletters
- Conducting ongoing project of identifying people of color residing in NJ counties from the United States Census of 1880
